Here we are, then, on the edge of the North Yorkshire moors. The farm is on the main road, opposite a garden centre. We go into the main building, which is the original stone-built farmhouse. Downstairs has become an atmospheric pub-type bar with a restaurant at the far end. As we've arrived early, we ask if we can have some coffee. "Certainly," says the young barman. We go upstairs to the lounge. A few minutes later a waitress brings coffee and biscuits on a tray.
Near the entrance is a reception desk. One of several black-uniformed young women checks us in and then takes us outside to a pretty courtyard with a fountain like a waterfall. The rooms with numbered doors all around are called "stables", which they probably once were.
Ours is on twenty levels and is delightful. There is an new-fashioned bed upstairs, and everything else is downstairs. The banisters each have a cut-out pattern of ripe barley, and the fireplace is made from rough-hewn timber. On it is a slim television. A comfortable sofa is tucked under the staircase. The floor is flag-stoned. "Turn up the thermostat if it's not warm enough," the young woman had said. "The heating's under-floor." We have a very nice shower and two pairs of slippers but, curiously, only one bathrobe.
